Customizing my Somnio Pacemaker 2.0

During the Somnio Press Launch, I had the chance to get my foot analyzed and had my pair of Somnio Pacemaker 2.0 customized.   Somnio Running Shoes is currently the only shoes you can customized based on your needs for races and training.  For some runners, the needs of the left and right foot are different.  Thus, there is a need provide different amount of cushioning or different amount of support in each foot.  Here’s how my Somnio Pacemaker 2.0 was customized.

Using a Laser Alignment Tool, Danny Orr of Somnio did the analysis for me and customized my Somnio running shoes.  During the analysis, it was clear that my right foot and left foot are different.  My right foot follow a neutral gait with a normal arch while my left foot tends to overpronate and has a slight high arch.  I usually get a pair of neutral running shoes.  No wonder, most of my injuries are on the left foot since I am not using the correct shoe type for my left foot.

Somnio is able to customized 3 parts of the shoe:

1.  The cushioning on the midfoot and heel.

2.  The shoe inserts with different arc heights.

3.  The thickness of the varus wedge

To correct my gait, Danny Orr suggested the following:

The custom cushioning at the heel gets the same treatment for both feet.  Both gets a 55D.  The D stands for density.  A 55D is the normal cushion.  There is a 65D for more support and a 45D which is softer.  No correction was needed at the heel.

Left Foot gets a 55D custom cushioning at the heel.

To lessen the pronation, Danny suggested the 65D for the left foot while we retained the 55D at the right foot.

Right foot gets the same 55D at the midfoot.

Left foot gets a higher density of 65D for more support and correction.

More customization was done inside the shoe.  For the foot bed or foot inserts, I got a normal arch height for the right foot and a higher arch height for the left foot.  This is to properly rest my left foot on the shoe.  The high arch on the left foot felt just right.

Same thing was done on the varus wedge.  The right foot got the normal thickness while the left foot got the thicker wedge.  This is to add more correction for my left foot that tends to overpronate.

The right foot gets a normal arch height as indicated by the green with two plus (++).

The orange wedge below it has a normal thickness as well.

The left foot gets more support by using a higher arch foot bed as indicated by the blue and three plus (+++).

The red varus wedge below it is thicker as well.

The shoe resulted to something akward at the start.  I can feel the difference between the left and right foot.  The wedge was making my left foot tilt a bit since the height was different.  I like the custom foot bed for the left foot.  My foot just sits well on a high arch insert.  The custom cushioning was not very noticeable yet.
