Cobra Energy Drink Fuels Athletes to Be Extraordinary

On August 3, top athletes will compete in the challenging and grueling Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cebu. Now on its sixth year, it is one of the most popular in Asia, drawing participants and fans from all over Asia Pacific.

Cobra Energy Drink has been powering up the event since 2009. In the Cobra Ironman 70.3, athletes need to complete 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike course and a 13.1-mile run. Those who reach the finish line within the cut-off time are truly one with Cobra Energy Drink’s mantra to “Be Extraordinary.”

A Higher Level

I am able to run for several hours to finish a 42 kilometer marathon. Preparation starts for at least four months with training runs 3-4 times a week. It takes discipline to stick to the plan. I would start from as little as 5 kilometers on Day 1 and increase to 30 kilometers in the final weeks. As the distance gets longer, the demand for nutrition becomes more apparent. I need more than a simple sandwich and fruit juice to last a marathon.

How much more if it’s a triathlon where I need to swim and bike and run at one event? That is definitely a notch higher. Athletes need to raise the bar from training to competition in order to meet the demands for the triathlon.

What it Takes to be Extraordinary

While nutrition and intake of food and beverages would be different among athletes, there are nutrients that are known to aid in performance that help athletes build reserve energy and Be Extraordinary during the race:

  • Caffeine: Improves alertness and mood and reduces fatigue in proper doses;
  • B-Vitamins (Vitamins B1, B3, B6 and B12): improves athletic performance by optimizing the body’s capacity to utilize oxygen. Essential of metabolizing carbohydrates, fats, and protein – or simply put, the production of energy from food;
  • Taurine: improves mental and athletic performance;
  • L-Carnitine: converts fats into energy when you do physical activities;

Breaking the Wall

In endurance events, some athletes would “hit the wall”. It’s a point where the body wants to stop in the middle of the race typically due to muscle exhaustion. It’s like having a big wall right in front of you to stop you from going further and to prevent you from finishing the race.

Imagine completing the swim and bike legs only to “hit the wall” during the run leg with only 5 kilometers left in the race. That’s is just heartbreaking.
When athletes hit the wall, they need a composition of nutrients that include sugar for an instant hit of energy, and also caffeine (in careful doses), taurine and B-Vitamins to help with mental focus and energy metabolism to help them raise the bar to their performance.

Good luck to all Ironman Participants

I know a lot of running buddies who started running as short as 3 kilometers in races and are now heading for Cebu to join the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines. It’s surely is a long journey for them. They have been training for months to be ready for the big day. Cobra Energy Drink aims for the Cobra Ironman 70.3 athletes to prepare the best they can to push their boundaries and become an inspiration to thriving athletes and everyday Filipinos.
