Seven reasons for you to run the Salomon City Trail

Some trails are found even in the heart of a city.

Are you someone who wants to experience trail running without leaving the confines of Metro Manila? Lucky for you, the Salomon City Trail Manila 2015 is just around the corner (quite literally) as it revs up this September 6 at the walled metropolis of Intramuros, considered as the oldest city in the country.

This is the second year that Salomon, one of the well-known outdoor brand in the world, has come up with an afternoon run (4:00 PM to 6:00 PM) that will challenge runners of all levels. Whether you are a beginner or an elite runner, this event promises to be different from your usual “flat road” fun runs because of the obstacles and different terrains that Intramuros can offer. Race categories are split between 6K and 12K distances.

Salomon City Trail Run 2015 FAQ

Introduced last year in the country, the City Trail Manila is also an introduction to trail running as the race course is composed of different stairs, dungeon passages, ramps and earth. Here are some of the reasons why you should be running this unique running event:

  1. Touring around the historical Intramuros

More than a century ago when the country was still under Spanish rules, the walled city was known as the capital of the Philippines. It was the seat of political and economic activities during the Hispanic era. Some of the great views you can catch include that of Baluarte Dilao which overlooks the Manila City Hall and the San Agustin Church which is a famous wedding ground. There are also historical places in the area including the Aduana (Intendencia) Ruins and San Ignacio Church ruins. It’s a touring and running package in one. Several locations in Intramuros that require entrance fees will also be accessible so long as you have your race bib with you.

  1. Different running terrains

The CityTrail is a simulation of a real trail run where runners are required to run on different terrains- sand, dirt roads, grass lands and mountain trails- with hundreds feet of elevation. This Salomon event is a good practice or a beginner’s course to help you train to adapt to multiple landscapes and situations that require a variety of foot strikes. If you want to change your typical flat road running experience, this is your opportunity.

  1. Running in the afternoon

Running while seeing the sun set is an exhilarating experience. Morning runs are great for getting inspired, but I find running as the sun is about to set as somewhat reflective and sentimental (that’s what you get when running in Manila Bay). While most fun runs is held in the wee hours of dawn when you are hesitant to get out of bed, running in the afternoon is easier as you are already active for most of the day. If you want to wrap things up for the week, this is one good way to do it.

  1. Local celebrities abound

This year’s CityTrail run promises to attract local celebrities like it did last year. So don’t be surprised if you see some of your favorite actors or actresses. Last year, celebs like Marc Nelson and Rhian Ramos (to name a few) graced the event. During the PR launch event of the race, several personalities were confirmed to attend the event, but we will not be giving names- you have to see them for yourself.

  1. Meet trail running champs

If you have been a trail runner for the longest time, then you may be familiar with some of the leading names in this running niche such as Majo Liao (1st place TNF 100 2015; 100 km women’s). She, together with other big wigs in the trail running community (mostly from Philippine Skyrunners group and Salomon brand ambassadors), will be marshalling this year’s urban trail running event.

  1. Salomon wayfarer sunglasses

This piece of trendy eyewear is included in the race kit when you register and can be claimed on the day of the event. One of the challenges in afternoon runs is protecting your eyes from the sunlight. The organizers of the event were clever to provide these sunglasses which you can also use on your next outdoor adventure.

  1. Weekend family getaway

The Salomon CityTrail run is also a great opportunity for you to hang out with your family (either running together or with them supporting you) as it is situated strategically on some of the best destinations in Manila. Before or after the run you can also visit or attend the mass at the Manila Cathedral. You can also drop by the many specialty shops in its vicinity.
