Merrell Philippines introduced recently their new line of trail running shoes- the Merrell MQM during the Bravehearts Trail Run last February 11 at Mt. Alapaap in San Andres, Tanay, Rizal. Hundreds of trail runners, first-timers and weekend warriors alike, graced the event’s 7K and 11K distances.
The event was the perfect opportunity to showcase the Merrell MQM’s performance as the race route has different terrains such as mud, grasslands, rocks, rivers and dirt roads.
Moving Quickly in the Mountains
Trail running is becoming one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in the country. Many road runners who want a different playground, other than concrete, now train their endurance in the trail races. And much like any race, you need to move quickly.
With that in mind, Merrell have come up with the Merrell MQM which stands for Moving Quickly in the Mountains. It’s a hybrid shoe made for hikers and trail runners who wants to conquer the rugged mountain trails. It’s also packed with features that help you tackle uphills and downhills with ease and without any discomfort.

The shoe has a FLEX connect EVA midsole which keeps the shoe agile and flexible. This allows the shoe to bend not only laterally but also sideways. Thus, it allows excellent support at any angle your feet lands in.
Merrell also equipped the MQM with the M Select GRIP outsole with 3.5 mm lugs. This provides a durable traction and excellent grip in any terrain helping you to keep your footing stable at all times. The sole is also thick enough to protect your feet from sharp rocks and other edgy trail obstacles.
The shoe also has the Hyperlock technology that help secures your heel while keeping it steady during each footstep. Its heel also comes with air cushioning for added stability and shock absorption. Moreover, it has a breathable mesh lining to keep your feet comfortable and well ventilated.

Initial Impressions on the Merrell MQM
We were lucky enough that Merrell provided us with a pair of the MQM which we tested during the Bravehearts Trail Run. It was the perfect scenario to break in the shoe as the trails of Mt. Alapaap offers some rugged terrains. Not to mention, its infamous sea of clouds.
The 11KM race category started with a lung-busting 2KM pure uphill course. It was then followed by a steep downhill where you have to do some rappels using the rope. After which, you make your way to the mountain’s summit with some rocky parts along the way.
The scene at the top was majestic. The sea of clouds was a sight to behold.
The next segment of the race was running in the mountains summit. Some parts even have slippery grasses and foliage, where your shoe needs to have some good grip. Luckily, the Merrell MQM does not disappoint in this regard.
You then make your way back to the event grounds which also served as the aid station. They offer a wide variety of food (i.e. bananas, chocolate bars, kalamay, Jelly Ace, etc.) and hydration to help you refuel.
Once you’ve replenished, you have to make way to a nearby falls via a gradual ascent with a few water crossings. This part was a bit rocky and has many single tracks. You then make a u-turn after reaching the falls and head back to the event grounds for the finish.
Overall, the Merrell MQM did justice to its title. It has helped me moved quickly in the mountains and without acquiring any injury or discomfort. It’s very responsive and keeps you stable at any type of terrain. The shoe also has a serious grip in most trail surface. Furthermore, it has a good fit and quite comfortable to wear.
It’s a good pair for hikers who also want to do speed hiking or trail running on the side. It’s like buying a hiking and trail running shoes in just one product.
In the coming days, we are going to log-in some mileage in our Merrell MQM trail shoe and give a more thorough review of this pair. So, look forward to it!
