Under Armour Philippines Casts the Spotlight on Mental Toughness with #TheOnlyWayIsThrough

Elite athletes and sports science experts discuss the crucial role of mental toughness
in an athlete’s life and professional career

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – September 11, 2021—Under Armour Philippines gathers the country’s leading athletes and sports science experts for #UnderTheArmour, a webinar on the key roles of mental toughness in sports. The event is in line with the brand’s global campaign #TheOnlyWayIsThrough, emphasizing how mental toughness allows one to constantly improve, push beyond limits, and overcome challenges.

With conversations around mental health and wellness becoming more open, prevalent, and relevant, #UnderTheArmour presents an opportunity for the public to learn more about reaching tough goals, taking failures in stride, and working toward success from those who know these experiences best.

The Gold Standard

Setting the tone for the event and providing a concise discussion on mental toughness is Lyn Hazel Calawod, OTRP, a dialectical behavioral therapist, certified clinical anxiety treatment professional, and the founder & director of Neurobalance Occupational Therapy. She presents basic working definitions and components for mental toughness and outlines various methods for strengthening one’s willpower.

Headlining the webinar is the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist, weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz. Together with her sports psychologist, Dr. Karen Trinidad, Hidilyn shares the long, arduous, yet fulfilling journey toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the mental preparations that they had to do alongside physical conditioning. She also talks about that golden moment at the Olympics and her prime advice for athletes who want to follow in her path.

Joining Hidilyn is a stellar cast of fellow athletes and Under Armour Ambassadors who have made waves in both team and individual sports.

There’s No “I” In Team

Training, falling down, and coming back strong with a team—if there are people who know these experiences the best, they’re the likes of Jia Morado and Sean Anthony.

A decorated volleyball player who has been named Best Setter and MVP across her collegiate and professional stints, Jia Morado knows how it’s like to lead a team toward victory and direct the pace of a heated game.

Known as a defensive player who’s been included twice in PBA’s Mythical Teams, Sean Anthony pulls all the stops to protect the homecourt, shoot for the win, and be in sync with his team mates under time pressure.

These top athletes talk how it’s like to develop and strengthen mental toughness in a group setting, sharing how it’s like to steel one’s willpower and courage in the face of team challenges, setbacks, and victories.

The Last One Standing

Combat sport veterans know that countless hours of training, sparring, and conditioning all get put to the test in just mere minutes. They get everyone’s help and support before the big match, but once they set foot on that mat or inside the ring, it’s all up to them.

It’s a familiar feeling for Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Meggie Ochoa and professional MMA fighter Mark Striegl. Both athletes have also won gold medals at the South East Asian Games—a testament to how their minds are just as tough and conditioned as their bodies.

Meggie and Mark discuss what takes place in their minds as they face their opponents, how they deal with setbacks and bouncing back, and how they balance self-improvement and working with others to secure that hard-earned win on the battlefield.

#TheOnlyWayIsThrough
