Running on a Treadmill versus Running Outdoors

Running on a treadmill vs running outdoors. It’s an ongoing debate. Personally, I prefer running outdoors. I prefer the scenery and the different movement of people and cars on the road. What is annoying though is I have to stop at every intersection to give way to cars. This is where I prefer the treadmill. If I want a speed workout, the treadmill makes sure I am continuously running while I keep my target pace.

Running on a Treadmill

Treadmills are one of the most popular and common types of exercise equipment. Treadmills are great for beginners who are not used to strenuous workouts. They’re beneficial for everyone regardless of their health conditions and body mass. It’s also suitable during bad weather, you can freely work out without being dependent on the weather. Most treadmills come with different features that you can use to your advantage.

Advantages of Using a Treadmill

Suitable for beginners. Treadmills are easier to use and a great introduction to those who are unfamiliar with different exercise equipment.

Runners can customize their speed. This is why it’s suitable for everyone. Users can freely adjust their speed to an extent they’re comfortable in. Beginners can start slow and more advanced runners can speed up the pace.

Less impact than running outdoors. Most treadmills are built with a comfortable running belt which is why your joints take less impact, especially to the knees, than running outside on the pavement.

Disadvantages of Using a Treadmill

Expensive. Most treadmills are expensive depending on the brand and model if you decide to purchase one for your home. There are cheaper options but the quality and the after sales support may be questionable.

They tend to take lots of space. Regardless of the model, some treadmills don’t fold and can be kept in a storage room which is why they take a lot of space and most of the time, they’re not visually appealing. Foldable treadmills are now available but they will still need a space when stored.

Irritating noise. Treadmills make a lot of noise due to their motors especially if they’re cheap. The noise can be irritating and frustrating which can affect your focus and attention. This is even more annoying for someone in the house who is not into running.

Running Outdoors

Running outdoors is a common form of exercise which is accessible by everyone. It promotes excellent mental wellbeing and overall health benefits. Running for at least 30 minutes can improve your immune system and prevent catching the viruses. It’s also an efficient way to burn calories and build up your endurance and strength. Running is a common and an effective way to help you maintain a healthy weight and healthy mind.

Advantages of Running Outdoors

It’s free!. Running outside is completely free and an easy way to exercise.

Vitamin D. Exercising outdoors can give us an efficient amount of sun exposure which is mainly where we get our vitamin D compared to exercising indoors.

Boost levels of dopamine. Dopamine, also known as the ‘happiness hormone’, can make us feel elated. Running is a great way to boost our mood and our dopamine levels which can improve our overall mental health.

Disadvantages of Running Outdoors

Higher risk of injury. Running outdoors can put us in a tight spot especially when we’re exposed to hazards like cars and curbs which can affect our wellbeing in the long run. It can also cause a lot of impact on our joints.

Dangerous. You have to consider a lot of factors when you’re running outside such as time and location. There are circumstances where we choose to run at night because it’s most convenient but if you live in an area where cars frequently pass by, it can lead to car accidents and other problems.

Weather. If it’s rainy, it increases the chances of slipping and can lead to numerous injuries. If it’s too humid, there’s a possibility of getting a heatstroke.

Deciding what’s the best option is up to your personal preference and goals. If you’re uncomfortable with running outdoors, it’s ideal to purchase a treadmill. If you’re an athlete and training to compete, it may be better to run outside. Both are beneficial depending on what’s practical for you and which one can work to your advantage.
