adidas’ Move For The Planet Initiative Supports Sustainability Through Sport

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – adidas recently unveiled a new global initiative called Move For The Planet. They pledged up to a total of €1.5m to Common Goal for every 10 minutes of activity logged across 34 sports in the adidas Running app from 1 June to 12 June. The initiative aims to turn global sporting communities’ activity into meaningful action for the planet.

Harnessing Sport to Drive Sustainability

“Move For The Planet is an opportunity to harness the world’s love of sport to support some of the communities that need it most. The impact of the climate crisis is being felt more severely in some places than others, however, the one thing that unites us all is our love for sport,” said Ashley Czarnowski, Senior Director, Global Purpose Marketing at adidas.

So, between 1 June and 12 June, we’re encouraging our global sporting community to join the movement and move for the places we play – it doesn’t matter how we move, just that we move to make a difference,” she said.

Join the Movement

For those interested in joining the movement, more information can be found at adidas.com/movefortheplanet.

Eligible sports include running, virtual running, plogging, treadmill running, trail running, walking, Nordic walking, wheelchair activities, strolling, hiking, elliptical workouts, tennis, soccer, golfing, stair climbing, track & field, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, squash, American football, handball, padel, baseball, beach volleyball, rugby, cricket, frisbee, field hockey, lacrosse, cycling, race cycling, mountain biking, and virtual cycling.

Project Funding Targets Sustainability through Sport

Common Goal will direct the projects funded by the contributions to countries including Colombia, Greece, South Africa, and Pakistan. Varied programs, such as renewing sports pitches using recycled materials or reducing plastic waste at sports facilities, are included. These programs have been specifically selected as they focus on areas most affected by climate change.

adidas’ Broader Sustainability Goals

The Move For The Planet initiative is part of adidas’ more comprehensive sustainability strategy. This comes after an announcement earlier this year from adidas stating that replacing virgin polyester with recycled polyester in its products is ahead of schedule and will be accomplished wherever possible by the end of 2024. However, it has been acknowledged that simply using recycled materials is not a complete solution, and the Move For The Planet initiative is seen as a way to broaden the company’s focus beyond its 2024 recycled polyester goal.
