Berghaus Vapour Claw Shoe Review

Berghaus Vapor Claw - Upper

Berghaus Philippines took us for a test run of their trail shoes at Mt. Batulao. I got to test the Berghaus Vapour Claw. It’s an impressive trail shoe. It’s lightweight and grips on the surface just like claws.

Runners and mountaineers got together last week for a Berghaus Adventure Challenge. It was an ascent to Mt. Batulao in Nasugbu, Batangas. We were given Berghaus shoes and apparels for the challenge.

Berghaus Adventure Challenge 2013

Since it was my first official mountain hike, I had a great experience. Mt. Batulao is great for beginners like me. But the hike comes with some tough parts especially on the way to highest peak and the descent using the Old Trail.

The Berghaus Vapour Claw was definitely tested during the Adventure Challenge. It conquered steep slopes, rocks, loose soil and a few mud. Here’s my review of the Berghaus Vapour Claw.

KEY FEATURES

  • Constructed with Limpet™ compression stretch panels in the flex zone and a modified EHS™ system for superb foot holding
  • You will stay on track with the high profile, edgy and omni-directional out sole featuring a Terracious Grip™ rubber compound and OPTI-STUD® technology

PROs

Strong grip. The grip of the soles were just impressive. It seems to dig deep on the soil and stick well on the rocks. I was confident on its traction that I would run up the slopes without any slip or fall.

Lightweight and supportive. The shoe itself is light that they can be decent road shoes.  Being light helps a lot in climbing too.  You are bringing less baggage on top allowing you to climb faster.

Cool and Comfortable.  We had a morning hike and it was hot.  We were at the summit around noon time and it has been a hot and humid hike.  Berghaus Vapour Claw’s breathable mesh material kept the feet cool.  It’s outsole was well insulated from the ground so you won’t feel any heat coming to your feet.

Great Support.  The feet has the tendency to twist from side to side when hiking due to the uneven surface.  Too much twisting would hurt the ankle and even lead to injury.  Berghaus Vapour Claw has good support in this aspect.  There was no pain on my ankles after more than 2 hours of the Adventure Challenge.

CONs

Too Roomy on the toes.  The shoe was a bit roomy.  Having some allowance on the size is a good thing and even important for trails.  But the Berghaus Vapour Claw shoe sizing was slightly bigger.  I would suggest trying out a half size lower than your normal shoe size.

Must Wear Socks.  Blisters are quite common when using trail shoes.  I strongly recommend wearing a good pair socks when using Berghaus Vapour Claw.  I wore socks so I did not get any blisters.  However, some were not as lucky.

SUMMARY

Berghaus Vapour Claw was able to surpass the Adventure Challenge with flying colors.  It was perfect for the trail.  I love how well it grips on the surface and keeps me on right track.  The weight also makes it suitable for the road. Thus, if the trail is a mix of soft and hard surfaces, Berghaus Vapour Claw will be a perfect gear.

Berghaus Vapor Claw is price at 4,995 Php and is available at Toby’s Sports.
